The History Of Safford

Safford was founded by a small group of people from Gila Bend. Safford’s founders, Hiram Kennedy, Edward Tuttle, and Joshua Eaton Bailey, chose to leave their original home after high waters devastated their dams and canals. They arrived in the area that became Safford near the start of 1874 and quickly began to lay out some buildings.

Once Safford had a few settlers, the area began to grow and expand. It was officially incorporated in October of 1901. It became a city in 1955. Safford was named for Anson P. K. Safford, who was Arizona’s governor at the time that the settlement was established.
